If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair.

C. S. Lewis

How true this is. Only the TRUTH can bring lasting comfort. Comfort in itself does not take our pain away, but comfort helps us endure.

So two things that I find can help.

1) Seek TRUTH
2) Have HOPE based on that truth

I agree with you Dennis. The truth may be different for everyone though. As we're all on different levels of understanding.

Joh 8:32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

1Th 4:13 Moreover, brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who are sleeping in death, so that you may not sorrow as the rest do who have no hope.

So the TRUTH of what happens when our loved ones die is revealed in the Bible. The TRUTH in this matter releases us from ignorance. The knowledge we gain in this gives us HOPE, and this hope helps us get through our pain successfully
JO B,
I don't know what the truth is, and i don't believe any human really does. Regardless -- read the stuff that Kira and Dennis have provided, if you like, and if you feel that it is helpful to you and rings true to you, then by all means continue with it. But there's no reason to assume that any particular religious text or spiritual book is any more or less correct than any other. If you want to find a spiritual path, then in my opinion the best way to do that is to research a few and see which one, if any, really calls to you and feels right to you.

I agree with you in this regard.... We should educate ourselves without prejudice. This is difficult because we have the tendency to judge without ALL of the facts. We have the tendency to draw conclusions without ALL of the information needed. Mostly because we close our minds off to contrary, or different points of view.

I also think that we should never stop seeking truth. I disagree that truth is unattainable. I think though that arguing and debating is detrimental to the pursuit of truth. I think talking...sharing...asking...listening...these things are better tools in pursuit of truth.

I think it is better to understand WHY someone believes something. In seeking to understand why someone believes something...listening intently to the reasons...then meditating on those reasons...Are they based on emotion, tradition, etc, or are they based on proof with evidence?

At the end of the day we all have the right to decide for ourselves. But I believe that it is important enough to put forth every effort to find TRUTH.
I don't believe any human is capable of knowing the truth about god, if there is a god (or gods, for that matter), at least not while still in this human life. I think the best we can do is to try to come to some approximation of a truth that works for us while we are her. Of course, not everyone feels the need to do that, either, and that's fine too.
We will NEVER know everything. We will ALWAYS have to keep learning.

I believe that there are many gods, but only one creator.

I believe that everything around us has been made (not here by chance (evolution))

I believe that the creator has told us why things are the way they are and what he plans on doing about it.

This knowledge gives me comfort...and I think this same knowledge can comfort everyone.
If anyone wants to know WHY I believe these things I would be more than happy to share.

One truth that I am certain of is that most people really don't want to know. So they don't ask, and if they do object, they don't listen to the response.

Their choice. I wish we as people could be more open minded about differing views and learn to truly listen to others.
Sorry, "her" = "here"

I am sincerely interested in your view on something.

Do you believe that we evolved?
If so I am wondering about the connection you make with evolution and an after life?

Your view intrigues me because everyone I have ever talked to about an after life fully believe in God.

If you want you can answer in a PM, or here.

Sorry to insert my two cents, and this is only my opinion based on a search for the truth.

The way the bible search has gone for me is that the  only way the spirit of the word comes to man is when god sends it upon you, on his time not before.

So I'm guessing that should make everyone able to put up with everyone else a little easier maybe?

"I know men and I tell you Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between Him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creation of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded his empire upon love; and at this hour millions of men would die for him."

Assumptions

An assumption is an unexamined belief: what is thought to be true without ever really realizing that we think in that way. For better or worse, understanding starts with entertaining the idea that something is true.  Truly profound thoughts generally come to light from the relaxation of these (flawed) assumptions.  This is where I find myself today...Perhaps, one of the more significant drivers to pushing down the loss and grief at the time of the accident, ignoring it and mindlessly walking…See More

Sibling Loss

This group is for anyone that has lost a brother or sister. Sibling loss is often minimized and people don't realize how devastating losing a sibling can be. I lost my older sister and my life will never be the same. She was my only sibling, I looked up to her, I went to her for everything. I lost my past, present and future. It is traumatic.See More

Triggers Continue to Surface

Late February is a challenging time of year for me.  Jen’s birthday is the 23rd and serves as an annual reminder of all of the potential that was lost…Her’s (mainly), mine, the world’s honestly.  This year she would be 52…It is increasingly hard to imagine, through all of the iterations possible, what she could have become, what was to be her (significant) impact on the world. That being said, things, emotions, have largely settled down since I committed a potential version of what could have…See More
