I have often heard people parot the phrase "suicide is the most selfish act".verry few,(if any),people kill themselves out of spite, and even if so,that person must have been awfully unkind to solicite such a drastic action.peoplr commit suicide for manny reasons.mental illness aflicts alot of people, and goes unnoticed and untreated in most.Childhood trauma/abuse haunts manny people.People kill themselves because they feel they haveno other choice,no hope, and the inner pain is unending. Before the medical examiner found that my sis was murdered,it was assumed that it was suicide, and I heard "suicide is the most selfish act" alot.Who is selfish are the friends/family/coworkers who inflicted such heartless cruelty on my sis.everyone who kills themselves at some point dreamed of a better life.A life of acceotance and love.A life where they could move past their problems and flourish.Who dare say it is a selfish act, when it is the suicide victim that will nolonger get to enjoy a life,or even expierience the simplest of pleasures.Suicide is not selfish. It is the last resort of a despairing soul, because they feel there is no hope, and they have nowhere to turn.

Lisa,

thank you for this post. I have been so close to suicide so many times and the only thing that has held me back is knowing what it would do to my family. It is not an unselfish act, it is an act motivated from total despair. Believing there is no escape from the life we are in other than that final act.I thank you for reaffirming that for me.

Assumptions

An assumption is an unexamined belief: what is thought to be true without ever really realizing that we think in that way. For better or worse, understanding starts with entertaining the idea that something is true.  Truly profound thoughts generally come to light from the relaxation of these (flawed) assumptions.  This is where I find myself today...Perhaps, one of the more significant drivers to pushing down the loss and grief at the time of the accident, ignoring it and mindlessly walking…See More
