Profile Information

About Me:
I am 32 years old, career counsellor and live in Kenilworth, Cape Town, South Africa. I lost my husband on the 15 May 2016. I am a widow and single mother raising our beautiful daughter.
About my Loss:
I lost my husband on the 15 May 2016 as a result of an accident at work. I was eight months pregnant when the accident happened. He was a spray painter and the accident resulted in him sustaining burns to 75% of his body. When there is no skin infection and organ failure is the main concern but he survived another two months which he spent in an isolated glass room at Vincent Pallotti surgical ICU in Pinelands Cape Town. They began skin graphing and he was working with physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists and things were looking up. The infections settled in, organs began to fail, then he developed severe seizures which caused swelling on his brain and by the Sunday his doctor presented me with a decision about whether I would let nature take its course or switch off the machines. He was already brain dead and his kidneys had shut down. Was that a choice? There I was mother to a one month old baby who had to make a decision about when to switch off my husbands life support. He had no blood pressure as they were pumping him full of adrenaline to keep him going. Once they stopped all the meds we watched as his heart rate just dropped until there was nothing and they put off the machines. I am 32, single mother and widow. While in hospital the registration of our first home was approved, so now I sit with our home without him - how can this be?

Assumptions

An assumption is an unexamined belief: what is thought to be true without ever really realizing that we think in that way. For better or worse, understanding starts with entertaining the idea that something is true.  Truly profound thoughts generally come to light from the relaxation of these (flawed) assumptions.  This is where I find myself today...Perhaps, one of the more significant drivers to pushing down the loss and grief at the time of the accident, ignoring it and mindlessly walking…See More

Sibling Loss

This group is for anyone that has lost a brother or sister. Sibling loss is often minimized and people don't realize how devastating losing a sibling can be. I lost my older sister and my life will never be the same. She was my only sibling, I looked up to her, I went to her for everything. I lost my past, present and future. It is traumatic.See More

Triggers Continue to Surface

Late February is a challenging time of year for me.  Jen’s birthday is the 23rd and serves as an annual reminder of all of the potential that was lost…Her’s (mainly), mine, the world’s honestly.  This year she would be 52…It is increasingly hard to imagine, through all of the iterations possible, what she could have become, what was to be her (significant) impact on the world. That being said, things, emotions, have largely settled down since I committed a potential version of what could have…See More
