About Me:
I am a 35 year old mother of 2. I am in recovery from substance abuse, and have seen the struggles of addiction first hand. I am celebrating 5 years clean and sober (Sept 26) and I am grateful for my experiences. I currently am in school full-time to become a licensed mental health therapist. I work full-time as well at a Community Case Management agency as a case manager for people with substance abuse and mental health disorders. I believe in the power of a support group as I regularly attend meetings, but grief is an area I have difficulties with. I am willing to learn and hear the experiences of others.
About my Loss:
Tragically, my best friend of 22 years passed away August 30, 2016 of an overdose. She had been clean nearly 7 years and was doing well. A botched spinal during her second pregnancy led her back to prescription drug use and quickly into heroin. Martha was a BEAUTIFUL spirit. She could light up a whole room with her bright spirit, her kindness and love for so many people. She made her presence known everywhere she went, with her big smile, and laughter that brought everyone around her closer. Although she battled some inner demons, she would give the shirt off her back to anyone in need. Rather, she would help others long before she helped herself. She was married to a man that also was in recovery. They had a fruitful marriage, and seemed to love each other through thick and thin. She was a gifted, fun and loving mother of 3 beautiful children. They will truly carry a void in their lives of not having their mother. This loss has stung harder than any other loss I have ever experienced. Maybe due to our long history, maybe due to the idea that we were in recovery together, and maybe just because she was too young to die, and had so much life to live. I feel an immense amount of guilt that I could not help her knowing what I know about recovery. I feel that it never has to end this way. I regret not staying closer to her in the last year. For not reaching out more when I saw that their might be a problem. I wish she would come bouncing through the door, like her usual bubbly self and tell us all it isn't real....

Assumptions

An assumption is an unexamined belief: what is thought to be true without ever really realizing that we think in that way. For better or worse, understanding starts with entertaining the idea that something is true.  Truly profound thoughts generally come to light from the relaxation of these (flawed) assumptions.  This is where I find myself today...Perhaps, one of the more significant drivers to pushing down the loss and grief at the time of the accident, ignoring it and mindlessly walking…See More
